Christina’s role at Smart Design Studio is Studio Director. As a registered architect with more than 35 years experience in architecture and interior design, Christina has worked across a broad range of sectors including bespoke single and multi-residential developments, hospitality and leisure, education and childcare centres, heritage, adaptive reuse and building renewal, workplace and interior design, and prefabrication.

Christina’s passion is to create high-quality and bespoke design solutions, tailored to each client. Her interest in the built environment is holistic, responding to and interpreting a brief to achieve an architectural solution that expresses the human spirit in a particular time, place, economic and social condition. A rigorous and systematic approach is applied at every level, from the largest scale to the smallest detail – instinctively seeking and extracting simplicity from complexity to achieve calm, balance and order.

Prior to joining SDS, Christina founded and directed her own award-winning architectural practice for over 20 years, and also worked in multi-disciplinary practices in both Sydney and Melbourne. With extensive experience in all phases of project delivery from concept to completion, Christina has a considered and collaborative approach creating strong client relationships, and rewarding outcomes within the built environment

Jane is an architect with 30 years’ experience who is passionate about design and architecture. She has worked across a range of project types and sizes in both small and large architectural practices.  This breadth of experience informs her role as Managing Director at Smart Design Studio, where she oversees operations across the financial, marketing, legal, IT, HR and administrative functions. Jane promotes clear communication between all parties involved in the design and building process.  She has a strong commitment to ensuring that SDS staff are well supported and able to maintain the high standards that have come to be a trademark of the practice.

Jane spent 13 years at Allen, Jack + Cottier (AJ+C), becoming a Director there in 2008. Her focus at AJ+C was on multi-residential and hospitality projects in Sydney and China.  She established her own practice in 2013, focussing on single residential where she developed very strong connections with her clients and the builders working on her projects.  Experience working in France and The Netherlands has given Jane an international perspective on the architectural profession. She has often been involved in pro-bono work throughout her career, most notably as a Board member, architectural advisor and mentor for The Anganwadi Project, an Australian NGO, which sends volunteers to India to deliver beautiful learning spaces for communities in need.

Practice Manager  Senior Associate

Nicole is Smart Design Studio’s practice manager, team-leader for large scale projects and a senior associate. Her expertise lies principally in cultural, public and residential projects. She completed overseeing the Science Gallery Melbourne, that occupies two levels in the new Melbourne Connect precinct. Nicole was project architect for the award-winning Indigo Slam in Sydney’s Chippendale, an inspiring residence for an art-collector and for Sydney Saesoon Presbyterian Church, a large facility for a congregation of over 3000 people. She has also managed successful competition entries for mixed-use developments such as Green Square Site 15 and Newmarket Green.

After graduating, Nicole worked with Richard Goodwin on public art and architecture projects and then for a number of years in the offices of McDowell+Benedetti in the United Kingdom, where she was project architect for the unique Scale Lane Bridge over the River Hull and for Claremont Fan Court School in Surrey, set in a 90-acre landscape of outstanding historic significance. Thorough and well-organised, Nicole’s enthusiasm for delivering projects of excellence is supported by her strong management, technical and design skills.

Derek is a registered Architect with over 15 years of experience. He is focused on the preparation and delivery of residential and commercial projects with an emphasis on elegant designs with high quality detailing. Derek exhibits strong problem-solving skills in working collaboratively with clients, consultants and builders to successfully deliver buildings of all categories and complexities.

Senior Associate

Kaldon is a Senior Associateat Smart Design Studio. He brings his extensive knowledge and experience in mixed-use multi-residential projects. Kaldon has a keen interest in sustainable and modern methods of construction that is built on his experience from London. His understanding and enjoyment of creating architecture brings value and quality to his projects.

Harald has over 30 years’ experience in architecture, 10 of which have been at Smart Design Studio. During that time, he has become a mentor to younger staff in the studio and has developed strong strategic skills in the design and management of projects such as Connor at Central Park.

Dominic is an Associate with over 10 years’ experience. As a Project Architect, he has been steering the construction phase of two intricate heritage projects. His expertise extends beyond the site, encompassing project delivery, design, and documentation—highlighting a dynamic and precise approach to architectural excellence.⁠

Nik is an Associate and a Team Leader of the Houses Team here at Smart Design Studio. In this role, he is responsible for overseeing some of the most exciting house projects. Nik’s collaborative and considered approach, excellent communication skills and strong attention to detail have made him a valuable asset of the leadership team.⁠

Olivia has over fifteen years’ experience and specialises in high-end residential design. She has a passion for quality design and craftsmanship and enjoys working at all stages of the project; from sketch to site. Most recently, Olivia has been the project lead on an expansive residence on the NSW South Coast.

Associate | Team Leader

Stefanie, the interiors team leader at Smart Design Studio, is a passionate interior designer with extensive experience across all project stages in various sectors in the UK, Asia, and Australia. By collaborating closely with architectural and project teams, she crafts bespoke macro-to-micro solutions that align seamlessly with architectural concepts, ensuring every project achieves the highest standards of quality and detail.

Adrian’s diverse portfolio spans residential, commercial, education, and health sectors. He was the Project Architect on the R.O.C. in Alexandria, a project which brings together the existing rail operations of Sydney into one facility and combines a competition-winning design concept with an important services and operational planning component. He is also leading the documentation of The Frederick and The Portman in Green Square.

Angus Hardwick is an Associate at Smart Design Studio and has nearly a decade of architectural experience. He has worked on a diverse portfolio spans cultural, public buildings, commercial, and multi-residential projects in Australia and Europe. Educated in Denmark, Angus excels in his strategic thinking, innovative design, and collaborative approach to design and architecture. Angus helps realise Smart Design Studio’s award-winning architecture by deeply listening to his clients and understanding their stakeholders needs while collaborating with industry-leading consultants and artists to achieve excellence. He has worked across all phases of the design process: including feasibility, concept, documentation, and realisation on site.

At SDS Angus has worked on  NGV Contemporary,  Science Gallery Melbourne, and Nautilus .

Arash is a registered architect and associate at Smart Design Studio.  He has contributed to award-winning designs, including Bridge 17 and Beau.

His design philosophy focuses on enhancing the human experience by creating joyful and rewarding spaces for people to visit, live, and work. With a collaborative approach and a passion for innovative solutions, Arash strives to make a positive impact through his architectural practice.

Hon has played a key role in delivering projects at Smart Design Studio, including White Rabbit Gallery and Arlington Grove. His ability to negotiate multiple concurrent projects successfully and deliver them on schedule ensures projects have ample time for further review, design development and refinement. Hon’s expertise is in the technical production and co-ordination of detailed and accurate documentation.

Maggie has over fifteen years of experience in architecture and interiors, specialising in multi-residential, retail, and commercial projects. She has managed all project stages, from design to construction. Notable works include the Saatchi & Saatchi fitout, she was a key team member on multi-residential projects including Connor at Central Park and is currently leading the project  SCEGGS Wilkinson House

Stephen Sharkey is a Senior Architect with over 12 years’ experience working on projects of varying scales in both architecture and BIM coordination roles across the UK, Ireland and Australia. Stephen has experience in high end residential and master planning and is currently leading the Nautilus project in Shell Cove.
