Hall 20 is a boutique apartment located metres from Bondi Beach. A contemporary extension of the original Bondi Post Office, the building comprises ten generous apartments above a corner retail tenancy. The design respectfully retains the original 1920’s mood and builds its new expression via new fenestrations that align with the existing Post Office’s windows. These finely detailed windows slice through the light sandstone façade in line with the brickwork of the former Post Office.
Expand ContentThe corner position has an established chamfer that the new building adopts, with angled sandstone blades to balance sun, views and privacy in this vibrant street. Its sculpted form and vertical emphasis complement the predominant Art Deco style of the neighbouring buildings and draw connections to the rugged coastal rock forms.
The scale of the building is informed by its surrounds, completing the street wall wrapping from Hall Street to Jacques Avenue. In setting the building back, it aligns with the existing post office while delivering a wide north-facing public domain; an excellent place for people to congregate.
Each apartment is arranged to benefit from cross ventilation and natural daylight. The inclusion of a wintergarden in all but one apartment creates a large indoor-outdoor space, somewhat sheltered from the elements and the buzz of the streets below.
The interiors are simple, finely detailed and complement the rigorous geometry of the architecture, while pursuing a timeless, classic aesthetic. Off-white walls, ceilings, doors and trims are paired with light honed limestone floors and refined joinery, in either matte black or white. The kitchen design, with its sculpted form and honed marble, echoes the architectural expression of splayed sandstone.
To meet the demands of a coastal environment while providing the greatest possible amenity and a clear delineation between new and old, the material palette is limited and intentionally durable.
