Designed by Smart Design Studio with Mirvac, The Moreton synthesises urban design, architecture and interiors into one cohesive response. Situated in Bondi, the 1.7hectare development comprises a family of buildings with a unique architectural expression, forming a courtyard around Scarba House. Respect for the urban context and existing heritage-listed house underpinned the design of 191 apartments, (as well as associated car parking, servicing and common areas) that now nestles between the neighbouring buildings to frame a new green square.
Expand ContentReferencing the art deco and 1970s apartment buildings of Waverley, the predominant material is raked joint painted brickwork. This is complemented by painted concrete slabs and striking architectural forms. Intentionally restrained, the material palette is animated by light and shade and is particularly beautiful when viewed through the substantial tree canopy.
The new green square setting is open to the public, creating a small park for the local community. A series of smaller courtyards and gardens link the buildings, allowing outdoor circulation routes as well as solar access and natural cross ventilation to the apartments.
Buildings that surround Scarba House adopt a contemporary but classic style comprising of vertically orientated openings, V-blade walls, simple painted bricks and metal balustrades. Elements are ordered, repeated and restrained to be respectful and cognisant of the listed home as primary.
The eight-storey building fronting Ocean Street is similar in scale to the neighbouring buildings, but steps down to a six-storey building to create the spine of the precinct and frame the central garden. Meanwhile three two-storey terraces border Dickson Park under the generous fig trees and complete the project.
