Starship Sydney is a charter vessel that skilfully achieves the brief given to Smart Design Studio: to create the most spectacular boat of its kind on Sydney Harbour.
Expand ContentThe main deck is a large column-free event space with a bar at the rear. This completely glazed room allows guests to enjoy uninterrupted views of the harbour. The lounge deck immediately above has a retractable enclosure with bifold doors beneath an aluminium roof. Above this, the sky deck is a top-level terrace open to the elements where panoramic views of the city skyline can be appreciated.
Enclosing the main deck and forming the balustrade to the deck above, the grey glass skin wraps the length of the boat from the inclined and curved bow to the cantilevered blades at the stern. While providing protection, the abundance of glass also ensures uninterrupted views from the main public areas of the boat. Below the water line is the commercial kitchen, VIP room and all the services and machinery required to operate a boat of this nature.
The simplicity of this four-storey boat is underpinned by a rigorous design development process with the client and consultants that sets a new benchmark for charter vessels on Sydney Harbour. Its sleek design, column-free open spaces and simple form are a synthesised response to the design challenge at hand: to create a versatile space that can be embraced by a multitude of events, from weddings and corporate events to dance parties.
