Located in the heart of Fremantle, the proposal comprises a six-storey boutique hotel with 117 rooms, plus retail and hospitality spaces. The ground floor accommodates the main hotel entrance, a restaurant and café/bar, and is highly engaged with the public and the lively streets of inner-city Fremantle.
The public domain has been designed as a series of spaces with unique characters that embed the building in place. Numerous landscape spaces provided at various levels complement the design as places of sanctuary for patrons and guests.
Expand ContentThe upper portion contains a diverse range of hotel rooms as well as a bar and function rooms. Level 1 opens onto to a generous courtyard space with a circular oculus that is open to the sky and a key feature of the development. The rooftop includes another restaurant and bar with a generous deck and a 19-metre pool which runs along the southern expanse.
The ‘U’ shaped building form has a stepped profile to visually correspond and relate to the smaller developments along Henderson Street and taller ones along William Street. These two interlinked forms meet at the corner of these streets, creating a dramatic hotel entry while acknowledging the diagonal axis towards Fremantle Prison – a World Heritage Site.
The building’s primary expression is of large circular columns set at regular intervals, which are reflected in the layout of hotel rooms within. At ground level, these columns form a deep colonnade creating a sheltered building perimeter to the ground floor hospitality spaces. Deep recessive balconies articulate the façades and provide private outdoor spaces for guests. Integrated balustrade planters provide a layer of wild landscaping to these balconies, and offset the regular column grid.
The overall landmark design is highly appropriate for a strategic and significant site within the city centre: a corner block which speaks to the adjacent historic buildings and contemporary ones alike.
