A refined and elegant approach was taken to updating Regent residence. The result is at once clean and contemporary while leaving the most beautiful parts of the Victorian terrace intact. The transformation was focused on bringing light into the characteristically dark front rooms and creating a seamless connection to the outdoors. Increased ceiling heights, generous volumes and borrowed space combine to create an abundance of light and a sense of spaciousness.
Expand ContentThe connection to the outdoors was created by internalising the level change and making a flush connection to the rear garden. The new combined living space benefits from four-metre-high ceilings, which seamlessly integrate with the garden when the pocket bi-fold doors are folded into the building’s façade.
Following the form of the adjacent terraces the back elevation is made up of three interlocking volumes that step down respectfully with functional customisation, such as the barbecue and daybed, maximising the usability of the outdoor space.
A linear skylight now spans the length of the kitchen, dining and living room, bringing a soft illuminance to the room. This idea of diffuse, indirect light enhances the quality of light throughout the home and was integral to the design.
Curves act as a common thread between the traditional and contemporary architecture. At ground level, a rounded ceiling connects the formal living room to the new combined living room. This motif is echoed in the detail of this light-filled new space, reappearing upstairs in the ensuite, bedrooms and attic ceiling.
