As an optometrist and retail store that specialises in premium, imported eyewear, for Optique Potts Point, we embraced the theme of light. In doing so we solved the inherent challenges of the retail shell while creating a serene environment. Set back from the street and raised upon a podium, our primary task was to visually engage the passer-by. We turned this challenge into an opportunity by enhancing the contrasting levels of light to deliver a brilliant ‘jewellery box’ at the foot of a dark, imposing building.
Expand ContentTo make the interior highly visible, we built an all-white space beneath a lantern of coloured mirrors. The result is an inviting retail space that readily signals its use to the community. The lantern uses four different colours of mirror, as well as coloured glass, to create a complex array of reflected colours and light. The effect is captivating and conceptually references what eyewear does; to tint, alter or enhance the image or light.
The lantern is illuminated by narrow ribbon lights that glow bright orange to attract attention from pedestrians on the street and cars driving by. These linear effects are complemented by spot lights that focus on the display of frames, creating distinct shadows and highlights. The mirrored lantern cleverly conceals the light fittings and other services within the space. Moreover, the white display panels, on which approximately 350 frames are mounted, are leather clad joinery doors that house additional stock and cases. Effectively this means that the sales area is also the stock room, creating a practical and efficient retail space within a limited footprint.
