Located at the meeting point of commercial and residential areas in Surry Hills, Nickson 61 presented the ideal opportunity for adaptive reuse to provide a significant architectural contribution to the area. On the corner of a row of terraces, the site comprised a late 19th-century terrace and a three-metre-wide sliver of land.
Expand ContentThe existing terrace speaks to the heritage of the conservation area, while the new addition creates a strongly defined bookend to the terrace row. This new façade adopts traditional brickwork construction to provide a dynamic, curved flanking element. Facing south towards a busy road, the sculptural form of the façade design takes location and aspect into account, utilising minimal glass and strategically positioned windows.
Two new high-quality residential units are provided on the upper two floors while a commercial space occupies the ground floor and basement. The commercial entrance is located on the corner, highly visible and separate from the residential entry.
Making the most of passive thermal and solar design on a south-facing site, the building observes foundational principles of energy efficiency. The additions provide improved amenity and access to natural light and ventilation for the residential dwellings.
