Located at the meeting point of commercial and residential zones in Surry Hills, Nickson 61 presented an ideal opportunity for adaptive reuse to provide a significant architectural contribution for the area. On the corner of a row of terraces, the site contained a late-19th century terrace and a 3m wide sliver of land.
The existing terrace speaks to the heritage of the conservation area while the new addition creates a strongly defined bookend to the terrace row. This new façade adopts traditional brickwork construction to provide a dynamic, curved flanking element. The sculptural form faces south towards a busy road. In response to this, the façade has been formed to minimise the amount of glass and to strategically place it where it best suits the internal requirements.
