This project consists of the refurbishment of a 9 storey heritage-listed sandstone building in Sydney’s CBD. In addition to the upgrade of multiple office floors, the scope included the foyer renovation and replacement of the 3-storey roof structure, now wrapped in an elegant zinc roof.
The roof top addition hovers over the existing sandstone parapet through the introduction of a perimeter balcony, differentiating the new from the old in a simple yet elegant manner.
Expand ContentThe office on this floor occupies the whole floor with a double height space. Highlighting this vaulted ceiling is a white set render finish that contrasts in colour and texture with the oak timber joinery and floors below. Matt black joinery, furniture and fittings complete the reserved colour palette.
Structurally, the addition embraces lightweight steel construction to uninterrupted glazing along these balconies, to provide light, ventilation and views of the Sydney skyline.
Attention to detail and rigorous documentation ensured that no downlights or AC grids were visible on the ceiling, contributing to the feeling of calmness that washes over the highly functional workspace.
The entry foyer features grey travertine on the floor and walls. A ribbed curved ceiling recalls the sites former life as Tank Stream, flowing into Sydney Harbour. These travertine slabs span between black portals that orchestrate entries and frame deep windows. Within each portal are Smart Design Studio bespoke furniture pieces.
The sensitive design of the addition results in an elegant new rooftop to the original sandstone building. The light-filled and calm spaces within are quite a surprise within this bustling part of Sydney’s CBD.
