The Austin consists of the refurbishment of a delipidated warehouse into a new mixed-use development in the heart of Surry Hills. The existing warehouse building has been reorganised into a ground level commercial space below two levels of high-quality residential apartments. Complimenting the bohemian character of Surry Hills, the rust red and Hot Chile render reference the original colour of the building and announces its distinct identity.
Expand ContentNew, beautifully proportioned and articulated rectangular openings are located within the original concrete beam and column façade. To give scale and gravitas to the building, these new hand-painted steel windows span two levels and present as a double storey of glazing. Though they appear bold and simple on first glance, a closer inspection reveals a window within a window, with recessed bi-folding on the upper part and a flush double-hung configuration on the lower part allowing the commercial space to open up to the street and public domain.
The apartments are simple, beautiful and light filled. Working within a wedge-shaped footprint has made each apartment unique, although the material palette is consistent. The penthouse apartment, for example, with a large open space, stair void, and a saw-tooth roof is a special space with sweeping views over Surry Hills. This is compounded by a generous balcony running the length of the building, topped with a dramatic cantilever roof.
