This project undertook the refurbishment of a nine-storey heritage-listed sandstone building in Sydney’s CBD. Along with the upgrade of multiple office floors, the scope included the foyer renovation and replacement of the three-storey roof structure, which is now wrapped in a sharp zinc roof.
Differentiating the new from the old in a simple and functional manner, the introduction of a perimeter balcony allows the rooftop addition to hover over the existing sandstone parapet.
Expand ContentThe office on this level occupies the whole floor with a double height space wrapping around all four sides. Highlighting the vaulted ceiling is a white set render finish, contrasting in colour and texture with the oak timber joinery and floors below. Matte black joinery, furniture and fittings complete the reserved colour palette. Attention to detail and rigorous documentation ensure that no downlights or air-conditioning grids are visible on the ceiling. In doing so the highly functional workspace is washed in an innate feeling of calm.
Providing light, ventilation and views of the Sydney skyline the addition embraces lightweight steel construction to uninterrupted glazing along the balconies.
Under a ribbed curved ceiling that recalls the site’s former life as the Tank Stream tributary, flowing into Sydney Harbour, the entry foyer features grey travertine on the floor and walls. Punctuating the travertine are black portals that orchestrate entries, frame deep windows, and showcase tableaus of Smart Design Studio bespoke furniture pieces.
The sensitive design results in an elegant new rooftop to the original sandstone building, while the light-filled and calm spaces provide a surprise within this bustling part of the Sydney CBD.
