Smart Design Studio recently participated in the Green Square Aquatic Centre competition for the City of Sydney. Our goal was to make a bright and sunny place to swim, where one might want to spend the whole day, not simply leave after swimming laps. This is achieved by placing pools on the upper levels, orientating the buildings to true north, and creating a translucent enclosure of polycarbonate and glass.
The roof is supported by deep glu-lam beams spaced closely together, deadening sound and tempering the light. The roof form folds down into walls, and is slightly fractured. This moderates the scale of the building, making the space which houses the programme pool and café upstairs, and the leisure pool downstairs, delightful.
