Smart Design Studio’s Waterbank proposal for Lend Lease is for two residential towers accommodating 260 apartments in Perth, Western Australia. Our strategy focused on connecting Perth’s urban uptown with its new waterfront downtown for living and recreation by extending the boulevard through from Parliament House to the Swan River.
Waterbank adopted a contemporary design approach, reflecting Perth’s traditions of modernism, with a strong form holding a coloured array of balconies to create a patterned artwork at a 30-storey scale. Our design language creates deep facades that appear delicate and sculptural, breaking the building down into distinct elements which combine blade walls with splayed balconies. These coloured balconies, inspired by the West Australian deserts, create two buildings that respond to the vibrant Perth light, differentiate themselves from one another and serve as a distinctive architectural gateway into the Perth CBD.
The 28 storey residential towers are orientated to maximise views in all directions and sunlight whilst their placement set back on the podium creates large amenity space for residents with a podium rooftop pool and cinema. Activating the streetscape the brick podium responds to human scale and the street frontage with retail, entrance lobbies, live-work units and two storey sky-terraces.
