The Moreton Bondi

The Moreton Bondi, for Mirvac, incorporates urban design, architecture and interiors from Smart Design Studio. An 8 storey building fronts Ocean Street, its scale similar to the neighbouring tall, modern buildings, with its distinctive angular facades articulating the western façade through a dynamic play of light and shadow.

A 6 storey building forms the long “spine” of the precinct, framing the central garden court, reinforcing an Allee that links Ocean Street with Wellington Street and reflecting the unique heritage building opposite. The new building has full width balconies arrayed along its North façade, providing depth, articulation and shading to those North facing apartments. A pattern of painted metal balustrades creates a contemporary classical order of base, middle and top to the building, with a subtle nod to the details of Scarba House.

The site is occupied by a family of five buildings, each named after a famed botanist; Noble, Ashby, Felix, Archer and Rica. Each has a unique character that responds to its orientation and the form and scale of its surrounds, including the retained Scarba House and its magnificent garden of  fig trees from which the project derives its name. The exterior of this heritage home is to be restored and refinished in grey and white tones. This idea of a traditional white house, by the beach, sets the palette for the whole development, enabling the forms and textures of the materials, animated by light and shade and coupled with the mature landscape, to create a unique garden development.
