Smart Apartment

Situated in the heart of lively Kings Cross, this airy, one bedroom apartment was once an awkward, poky studio. The transition into a hip apartment was facilitated by the creation a red lacquered joinery wall, like a very compact and functional Swiss army knife that runs the full length of the apartment, housing all the utilities: kitchen appliances, laundry, AV equipment, wardrobe and general storage. In addition, a sliding ‘art wall’, featuring evocative imagery by photographer, Tim Richardson. The design is deliberately strong and bold.

The original features – window frames, ceilings, cornices, bathroom tiles and terrazzo flooring – of this handsome 1920s apartment block have been left intact, the radical contrast of old and new adding to the visual impact of the space. Although the apartment is only 40 square metres, natural light from all sides and the streamlined design creates the impression greater space. This seense of room to manoeuvre is further enhanced by the flexibility of design: the custom-made bed doubles as a daybed, transforming an otherwise small bedroom into an extension of the living area. Completed 2002.
