Within an existing family home, this spacious kitchen was conceived to connect the dining area on the lower level with the casual lounge on the upper level through a continuous custom artwork that stretched between the two spaces. Key functional components of the kitchen are smartly detailed in stainless steel, with all elements – including the sinks and cooktop – being carefully integrated into the benchtop itself. The streamlined, stainless steel utility bench sits atop a timber plinth that ties the spaces together. A full-height joinery unit finished in white satin polyurethane completes the new kitchen and conceals all bulky storage items including fridge and freezer, a walk-in pantry, broom closet and appliance pocket with led lighting.
Site-specific work by Melbourne artist Camille Hannah was designed for mounting onto overhead joinery, its horizontality creating a pure through-line. The joinery conceals the range hood whilst also providing generous storage for crockery, glasses and cookbooks in the kitchen and AV equipment and books in the lounge. Completed 2013.
